HDPE geomembrane construction technical requirements and welding requirements

The core requirements for HDPE geomembrane construction are: the base surface should be flat and clean, the ambient temperature should be higher than the wind force should be avoid artificial wrinkles and allow for expansion and contraction; welding should be mainly done with a double-rail hot melt welding machine (overlapping), the temperature and speed should be strictly controlled, and a trial welding test should be carried out before each shift. The air tightness of the weld must be tested.

I. HDPE Geomembrane Construction Technical Requirements.

1;Carry out the HDPE geomembrane construction process in the following order: lay the geomembrane → overlap and weld the seams → weld the seams → conduct on-site inspection → repair defects → perform re-inspection → carry out backfilling.

2. Avoid artificial wrinkles as much as possible when laying the HDPE geomembrane. Allow for expansion and contraction caused by temperature changes based on the local temperature variation and the performance requirements of the HDPE geomembrane. Also, allow for the geomembrane’s expansion and contraction according to the site topography and laying method to adapt to different foundation conditions.

3. Minimize walking on the membrane surface and carrying tools after laying the material. Do not place or carry any objects that could damage the material on it to prevent accidental damage.

4. Prohibit smoking at the HDPE membrane construction site. Do not let personnel walk on the membrane surface wearing shoes with metal nails, high heels, or hard soles. Prohibit any activities that may damage the geomembrane.

5. Place a 20–40 kg sandbag every 2–5 meters along the edges of the membrane after laying the material| and before applying the protective layer to prevent it from being blown away by the wind.

6. Perform HDPE geomembrane anchoring strictly according to the design. If the construction unit proposes alternative anchoring methods in complex terrain areas, obtain approval from the design and supervision units before implementation.

II. HDPE Geomembrane Welding Requirements:

(1) The overlapping surfaces of HDPE welds must be free of dirt, sand, standing water (including dew), and other impurities that could affect welding quality. These must be thoroughly cleaned before welding.

(2) At the start of each welding session (early morning and after lunch break), the operator must conduct a trial weld on-site. The operator may proceed with formal welding only after the trial weld passes inspection.
(3) The constructor should preferably perform HDPE welding using a double-track hot-melt welding machine. The constructor must overlap the two layers of HDPE geomembrane smoothly and evenly.
